No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
