Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
