This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
